I grew potatoes last year in the abandoned area of my house and yielded much better than expected. I will try to share my experience with you. Potato is a winter crop, that is, winter is the perfect time for growing potatoes. Different countries plant potatoes based on the environment, but in America, the right time to plant potatoes is March, April, or May. If you ask me, I would say the middle of March is the perfect time to plant potatoes. There is no specific place to plant potatoes. If you want, you can plant potatoes in a small garden or small places. However, it is important to plant enough potatoes in the land to get a good yield. If you ask me, last year I planted 600 kg of potato seeds in one acre of land. The most important factor for potato cultivation is soil preparation. Light-nature soil is required for growing potatoes. For light-nature soil, the land should be plowed with a tractor. If the land is wet, it should be dried for two days. One of the most important factors for growing potatoes is fertilizer. The land must be prepared with various fertilizers. For me last year, I used 130 kg urea, 90 kg TSP, 100 kg MO, 60 kg of gypsum per acre before planting potato seeds. And must use organic fertilizer for better yield. I used 5-6 tons of organic fertilizer in one acre of land. After mixing fertilizer and organic fertilizer, the land should be plowed by tractor two times. Then the land will be ready for growing potatoes. The next step is to prepare potato seeds. We have to collect potato seeds of improved varieties from the market. We can plant whole potatoes or cut the potatoes then plant. Cut the potatoes and put them at least two eyes must be placed on the part. While cutting potatoes, it is important to keep the knife and bowl clean with soapy water to avoid spreading germs from one potato to another. And the potato seeds should be cut lengthwise. Now the next step is potato seeds treatment. For better yielding potato seeds treatment is very important. There are actually two ways I did applied one last year. For this treatment, we need (Mercuric chloride, Formaldehyde or yellow oxide of mercury). If the potato seeds are immersed in these liquids for some time, the potato will be purified. Now only thing is left is to plant the seeds. Potatoes grow better planted in rows spaced 3 feet apart. Now we have to plant the seed potatoes in a trench that is 6 to 8 inches deep and place the cut side down with eyes facing up. We have to space the seed potatoes 12 to 15 inches apart. After four months, the potatoes will be ready for harvest.

Or you can also grow potatoes in pots or containers. There are actually lots of benefits to growing potatoes in pots or containers. I also grew potatoes in containers in my garden. Because it’s really easy to harvest and you don’t have to worry about potatoes while harvesting. Last year I grew potatoes in 10 containers. Each container was 20 liters. How to make containers ready for plants? Well, it’s pretty simple if you ask me. First of all, we need to fill the bottom with a small layer of compost. After that, we have to cover it up with blood fish and bone compost. Blood fish bone is a fertilizer. You can buy it from the market or store. Now how many potatoes should you plant in each pot? Well, that depends on the variety of potato. For first early and second early potatoes, you have to plant two potatoes in each pot. And for the main crop, you have to plant one potato in each pot. Now cover up the pot with compost or you can also use light soil. If you ask me, I suggest compost because by using compost potatoes can grow really fast. Now you have to dig a little hole in the garden and put those containers in the hole because if the roots reach the bottom, potatoes can get nutrients from the soil. Taking care is the most important part. It’s really important that they don’t dry out, so make sure you are keeping your pots well watered. That’s pretty much all for growing potatoes in containers.
